The Things That Go Bump in Our Heads
We've all heard the expression "things that go bump in the night."
But what about the things that go bump in our heads?
You know what I'm talking about.
Those thoughts that seem to appear out of nowhere, often when you're trying to concentrate on something else. Or worse, when you're finally ready for a good night's sleep.
The conversation you need to have.
The decision you've been putting off.
Something you want to do but haven't quite figured out how to make happen.
And let's not forget all those everyday responsibilities that have taken up permanent residence in your head.
Before you know it, one thought has turned into five, five into ten, and suddenly you're trying to figure out everything at once.
And somehow, you're no closer to figuring out any of it.
Here's something I've been reminded of recently.
Just because a thought is taking up space in your head doesn't mean you have to do something about it right then and there.
Nor does every thought deserve the same amount of attention.
Sometimes we need to get those thoughts out of our heads so we can actually see what we're dealing with.
Maybe that means writing them down.
Or maybe it's simply asking yourself which of those thoughts really needs your attention and which ones can wait.
Because when everything is swirling around in your head, it can be difficult to distinguish between what's urgent, what's important, and what's simply making noise.
And sometimes the loudest thought isn't the one that matters most – and is simply a distraction.
So, the next time things start going bump in your head, consider giving those thoughts somewhere else to land.
You might be surprised by what becomes clearer when they're no longer competing for space in your head.
Could you use a little more clarity and a little less noise?
