Are You Thinking Your Way Toward a Decision—or Around One?

There's nothing wrong with giving something thought.

In fact, when we're making decisions about things that matter to us, I believe thoughtful consideration is important.

But there's a difference between thinking something through and thinking about it over and over again.

One helps us make decisions.

The other can keep us from making any.

And for those of us who are highly responsible, this can be particularly challenging.

When Overthinking Gets in the Way of Making Decisions

We're accustomed to anticipating what might happen, considering how our decisions will affect others, and making sure we've thought of everything before taking action.

After all, we don't want to make the wrong decision.

Or overlook something important.

Or disappoint someone.

So, we keep thinking.

And thinking.

And thinking some more.

But at what point does all that thinking stop helping and start getting in our way?

What If You Focused on Just One Question?

What if, instead of trying to find an answer to every question running through your head, you gave yourself permission to focus on just one?

Not necessarily the easiest one.

Or the one someone else wants you to answer.

But the one that matters most to you right now.

You may not have the answer immediately.

That's okay.

The point isn't to have everything figured out.

It's to give yourself enough room to begin figuring out what matters.

And perhaps that's where movement really begins.

Not with another list of things to accomplish.

Not with another hour spent going around in circles.

But with a little less noise and a little more attention to what you're actually trying to tell yourself.

Are You Moving Toward a Decision—or Avoiding One?

So, here's a question worth considering:

Am I thinking my way toward a decision, or am I thinking my way around one?

And if you recognize that you've been thinking your way around something, perhaps it's time to ask yourself what is keeping you from making a choice.

Because sometimes it's not that we don't know what we want.

It's that we're hesitant to act on it.
