The Power of One Small Step
One of the biggest myths about change is that it starts with certainty. We imagine that before we take action, we should know exactly what we want. Exactly where we’re headed. Exactly how it will all work out.
So we wait.
We wait for clarity. We wait for confidence. We wait until we’re sure.
And often, we stay exactly where we are.
The truth is that most meaningful transformations don’t begin with certainty. They begin with curiosity.
Looking for Answers, We Can’t Yet See
Many of the women I work with are standing at a crossroads.
Not because their lives are falling apart. Because something inside them is asking for more.
More fulfillment.
More alignment.
More connection to themselves.
The challenge is that they often want to know where that feeling is leading before they’re willing to take a step. They want the map before they begin the journey. But life doesn’t usually work that way.
Clarity is rarely something you find by waiting.
More often, it’s something you discover while listening and acting.
You Don’t Need the Whole Staircase
There’s a quote often attributed to Martin Luther King Jr.: “You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”
I think that’s especially true when it comes to personal growth.
The first step might be:
Scheduling a conversation you’ve been avoiding.
Taking a class that sparks your interest.
Blocking an afternoon for yourself without feeling guilty.
Exploring an idea you’ve been dismissing.
Hiring a coach.
Attending a retreat.
Trying something that feels slightly outside your normal routine.
None of these actions guarantees a particular outcome. That’s not their purpose. Their purpose is to give you information.
Small Steps Create Momentum
When people think about change, they often focus on the destination. But shifts and transformations happen in the process.
One small step creates awareness. Awareness creates confidence. Confidence creates momentum. Momentum creates change.
Looking back, many of the biggest shifts in my own life began with a decision that seemed insignificant at the time.
A conversation. A workshop. A new experience. A willingness to explore instead of dismiss.
I didn’t know exactly where those choices would lead. I simply knew they felt worth investigating. And each one revealed something I couldn’t have discovered by standing still.
Stop Asking, “What If It Doesn’t Work?”
One question keeps many people stuck: “What if it doesn’t work?”
It’s understandable. But there’s another question worth asking: “What if it teaches me something?”
Not every step leads exactly where you expect. But every step gives you information.
You learn what energizes you.
What matters to you.
What no longer fits.
What you want more of.
And that information becomes the foundation for your next decision.
The Real Goal
The goal isn’t to make a perfect choice. The goal is to stop waiting for certainty before you begin. Because certainty is often the result of movement, not the prerequisite for it.
Most people don’t find their way because they had a flawless plan. They find their way because they were willing to take one small step, learn from it, and then take another. And another.
Until one day, they realize they’re no longer where they started.
A Question for Reflection
What’s one small step you’ve been considering but haven’t taken?
Not a life overhaul.
Not a five-year commitment.
Just one small step.
The kind that feels manageable.
The kind that sparks curiosity.
The kind that might reveal something you can’t see from where you’re standing today.
Because transformation rarely starts with certainty.
The goal isn’t to blow up your life. It’s to feel more like yourself within it.
